Community ownership models in Renewable Energy (RE) deployment offer a promising pathway to inclusive, equitable and just benefit-sharing for host communities – yet their application in the Global South remains rare and underdeveloped.

Led by the JustRE Alliance, this project brings together civil society organisations (CSOs) and practitioners in a facilitated Community of Practice (CoP).  Through knowledge sharing, documentation and convening, we aim to empower members towards active participation and co-ownership, ensuring communities are architects of a just, inclusive energy future.

We have convened six online sessions for peer learning exchange, comparing models and co-developing tools around community ownership:

  • Session 1: Defined community ownership
  • Session 2: Explored Indigenous equity partnerships in project development
  • Session 3: Examined capacity building as a foundation for meaningful ownership
  • Session 4: Financing Mechanisms to Enable Community Ownership
  • Session 5: Trauma-Informed Approaches to Community Ownership in Large-Scale Renewable Energy
  • Session 6: Community Participation in Offshore Wind

The CoP participants and stakeholders will also meet for a two-day in-person workshop in 2026 to consolidate learnings, deepen collaboration and set the future agenda for advancing community ownership in the energy transition.
