Community ownership models offer a promising pathway to more inclusive, equitable, and just energy systems – yet their application in large-scale, utility-level contexts in the Global South remains rare and underdeveloped.

This project brings together civil society organisations (CSOs), practitioners, and allies in a facilitated Community of Practice (CoP) to advance understanding, capacity, and advocacy for community ownership in large-scale RE.

INSPIRE and partners will convene at least six virtual CoP sessions over the year, facilitating a peer learning exchange around key planning and implementation topics around community ownership. These sessions will surface lived experiences, identify enabling conditions, and co-create strategies for implementation and policy.

The project culminates in a two-day in-person workshop in 2026, where CoP participants and stakeholders will consolidate learnings, deepen collaboration, and set the future agenda for advancing community ownership in the energy transition.

Through knowledge sharing, documentation, and convening, this project empowers CSOs and practitioners to move beyond consultation towards active participation and co-ownership — ensuring communities are not just recipients of renewable energy, but architects of a just, inclusive energy future.
