Fostering Inclusive Growth Through Climate Change Champions

Learn about our new partnership and how we aim to enhance climate change mitigation by aligning them with local developmental objectives.

INSPIRE is thrilled to announce a new partnership with Democracy Works Foundation (DWF) in the “Fostering Inclusive Growth through Climate Change Champions” (FIGCCC) project. Co-funded by the European Union, this project aims to create synergies between local governments, civil society organizations (CSOs), and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to address climate change collaboratively.

By integrating public and private development priorities with community-driven climate action, this approach aims to enhance the impact of climate change mitigation efforts.

Why Independent Power Producers Matter

The inclusion of IPPs is crucial for several reasons. As key agents in climate change mitigation, their economic development initiatives often align with the development goals of local governments and CSOs. These organizations are already on the front lines, providing essential services and building resilience against climate change impacts. By directing mitigation funds towards community-driven adaptation and resilience-building projects, we can support the Just Transition, ensuring that no one is left behind as South Africa moves away from fossil fuels.

Context and Progress

Since March 2019, the FIGCCC project has been actively working with CSOs and local governments across four municipalities in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces. One significant outcome has been the formation of the Climate Justice Action Network, a coalition of CSOs advocating for the inclusion of their constituencies in climate-related decision-making processes. Additionally, the project has facilitated climate change planning at the municipal level, exemplified by the co-creation of Needs Assessments and Response Plans in the Witzenberg municipality.

Objectives

The collaboration between DWF and INSPIRE will focus on these key objectives:

Integration Potential: INSPIRE will lead research efforts to bridge communication gaps between IPPs and communities with the goal of finding effective ways to align community-driven climate actions with the development priorities of both public and private sectors.

Engagement and Coordination: This involves exploring opportunities to enhance engagement and coordination among private, public, and civil society sectors. The research will support the advocacy for integrating climate change considerations into broader developmental priorities.

Closing Event: To culminate the project, DWF, INSPIRE and other key partners will host an event to present their findings and facilitate networking among local government, civil society, and private sector representatives. This event will not only mark the project’s conclusion but also pave the way for potential future collaborations.

This partnership signifies a significant step towards fostering inclusive growth and building resilient communities in the face of climate change. By working together, we can ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all.
