The REIPPPP Booksprint is a collaborative and creative documentation project that captures a decade of lived experience in implementing social performance in South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). This initiative seeks to distil insights, challenges, and lessons learned by SP practitioners working at the frontlines of the country’s renewable energy transition.

The retreat brings together SP practitioners, facilitators, and creative professionals in a three-day reflective retreat designed to surface and articulate what has been learned about SP in the unique context of a government-driven, socially-embedded procurement programme. It blends traditional writing with art, journaling, poetry, embodiment, and dialogue, ensuring the final outputs reflect both the technical and emotional dimensions of the work.

Following the retreat, insights will be expanded through targeted interviews with non-SP stakeholders, enriching the narrative with diverse perspectives. The resulting outputs—a richly designed report, a concise briefing, and a podcast—will inform SP practitioners, IPPs, NGOs, financiers, government officials, academics, and activists locally and globally, fostering stronger social performance practice and justice-oriented approaches in renewable energy development.

By giving space to reflection, healing, and creativity, the booksprint honours the personal and professional journeys of SP practitioners while contributing to a more just, impactful renewable energy sector.
