Renewable energy and local development: Seven lessons from the mining industry

Academic Research and Theses:   2017   -   By Lochner Marais, Holle Wlokas, Jiska de Groot, Noleen Dube & Andreas Scheba

This study examines the transition of South Africa’s energy sector from fossil fuels to renewable sources and emphasizes the importance of community engagement and socioeconomic development in the renewable energy industry. Drawing lessons from the mining industry, the study advocates for effectively managing social disruption, understanding community dynamics, establishing responsive institutions, employing trained community practitioners, defining clear objectives for local development, promoting economic diversification in remote areas, and planning for potential project closures. By incorporating these lessons, renewable energy projects have the potential to not only provide clean energy but also contribute to and shape local development.
